Dionicio Rodriguez Bridge in Brackenridge Park

historic place

The Dionicio Rodriguez Bridge is a historic structure located in Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. This unique pedestrian bridge was built around 1926 by Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez. Rodriguez was known for his distinctive faux bois style, a technique where he sculpted concrete to realistically resemble wood. The bridge spans a flood channel of the San Antonio River and measures 98 feet in length. It features 33 pairs of vertical concrete "tree trunks" that support an arbor-like roof of deeply grained "branches." Its realistic detailing was even noted by Popular Mechanics magazine in 1927, which reported that park attendants claimed it fooled woodpeckers. The artist's name, "D. Rodriguez," is incised near the northern end of the bridge. The Dionicio Rodriguez Bridge is considered a significant work of art and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, having been added in 2004. It is one of the few known projects Rodriguez completed that was commissioned by a municipality. In 2002, the bridge underwent restoration by Carlos Cortes, whose father, Maximo Cortes, assisted Rodriguez in its original construction. This bridge remains a notable example of Rodriguez's artistic legacy in San Antonio.
