Fairmount Hotel, The
historic place
The Fairmount Hotel, a historic place in San Antonio, Bexar County, was built in 1906. Designed by architect Leo M.J. Dielmann and constructed by J.P. Haynes, it served as a "drummer" hotel for traveling salesmen. In 1985, the hotel faced demolition to make way for new development. To preserve this significant structure, the entire 1,600-ton building was famously moved six blocks through downtown San Antonio. This remarkable feat earned recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest structure ever moved on wheels. Following its relocation, the Fairmount Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It remains a notable example of architectural preservation in San Antonio.
