First National Bank of San Antonio
historic place
Welcome to San Antonio, Texas. Our stop is the historic First National Bank of San Antonio building. This structure, located in Bexar County, was completed in 1886. It was designed by New York architect Cyrus L.W. Eidlitz. The building housed the San Antonio National Bank, which was organized in 1866 by George W. Brackenridge and others. This institution was the city's first federally chartered banking institution. The 1886 building served as the fourth structure for the bank. Its Victorian design features Moorish arches, ornate ironwork, and a distinctive decorative southeast corner tower. The limestone used for its construction was mined from local quarries. The San Antonio National Bank occupied this facility until 1970. In 1978, the Pat Maloney family purchased and restored the structure. A historical marker was erected here in 1979. This building stands as a tangible link to San Antonio's early financial and architectural development.
