Franklin, Thomas H., House

historic place

The Thomas H. Franklin House, located at 105 East French Place in San Antonio, Bexar County, was completed in 1891. This historic place was built for Thomas H. Franklin, a prominent attorney in San Antonio. The house is a rare example of a transitional Queen Anne-Shingle style residence in the city. Noted architect James Riely Gordon designed the two-story, wood-frame structure. Gordon was well-known for his public buildings, making the Franklin House one of his relatively few residential designs. Thomas H. Franklin lived in this residence for over 40 years, until his death in 1932. He had a distinguished legal career, serving as president of the Texas State Bar Association, and was appointed by President Grover Cleveland as a special prosecutor. The Franklin House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1986. Today, it is situated on the campus of San Antonio Academy. Its architectural style and association with Thomas H. Franklin mark its historical importance.
