Garcia-Garza House
historic place
The Garcia-Garza House, located in San Antonio, Bexar County, is a historic place. Constructed around 1856, it stands as one of the oldest residential structures in San Antonio. The house is notable for its continuous use as a residence. The Mariano Garcia family occupied the home at the time of its construction, and their descendants lived there until its sale in 1981. This represents the longest continual habitation by a single family of any structure in San Antonio. The house was built on land inherited by Tomasa Chavez from her father, Ignacio Chavez. Over time, additions were made to the house around 1900, 1910, and 1982, reflecting its architectural evolution. It is the only residence remaining in the heavily settled area immediately north of downtown, adjacent to San Pedro Creek and the San Pedro Acequia. The Garcia-Garza House provides a record of continuous family proprietorship and architectural adaptation in San Antonio.
