Guenther, Carl Hilmar, House

historic place

The Carl Hilmar Guenther House is a historic place in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. This residence was built by Carl Hilmar Guenther, a German immigrant and master millwright who came to Texas in 1851. In 1859, Guenther moved his milling operation to San Antonio and established what would become Pioneer Flour Mills, building the city's first steam and water-powered mill. The original one-story house was constructed around 1859 or 1860, using hand-hewn limestone blocks. Over the years, the house saw several alterations, with notable additions and remodeling in 1915 that shaped its current appearance, incorporating elements of the Arts and Crafts style. The Carl Hilmar Guenther House was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 11, 1990. Today, it operates as a museum of milling history, a restaurant, and a store, preserving a significant part of San Antonio's industrial heritage.
