Heidemann Ranch, San Antonio, Texas
historic place
The Heidemann Ranch is located in northwest Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. It represents a significant example of 19th-century German immigrant settlement in the area. William Heidemann, an immigrant from Prussia, purchased 320 acres of land with William Hausmann in 1856. Heidemann later became a U.S. citizen. The property was divided in 1873, with Heidemann receiving over 170 acres. The ranch complex includes nine historic structures built from the 1860s to the 1930s. Among these are a log house, a stone barn, a stone smokehouse, and the Heidemann family cemetery. The Heidemann family maintained ownership of the land for 137 years, until 1993. The Heidemann Ranch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 6, 2011. Restoration work on the log cabin, barn, and smokehouse by Gilbert E. Barrera received a Historic Preservation Award in 2016. This site preserves structures that illustrate early ranch life in Bexar County.
