Majestic Theatre, San Antonio
historic place
The Majestic Theatre, a historic place in San Antonio, Bexar County, was constructed in 1928 and opened on June 14, 1929. Architect John Eberson designed this atmospheric theater for Karl Hoblitzelle's Interstate Theatre chain. At its opening, the Majestic was the largest movie house in the South and the second largest in the nation. It was also the first fully air-conditioned theater in Texas. The design features Spanish Colonial Revival elements and an ornate interior. Designated a Texas Historic Landmark in 1991, with a marker erected that year, it became a National Historic Landmark in 1993. After renovation, the theater reopened in 1989, continuing as a significant performance venue.
