Menger Soap Works

historic place

The Menger Soap Works in San Antonio, Texas, holds importance as a historic place. Johann Nicholas Menger, a German immigrant, arrived in San Antonio in 1847. In 1850, he established a factory that supplied soap for the city and much of southwest Texas. By 1873, Menger constructed the distinctive limestone building that housed his soap works. This factory, utilizing the waters of San Pedro Creek, operated until the early part of the twentieth century. The Menger Soap Works was San Antonio's first manufacturing enterprise. It is considered a rare example of pre-Civil War industrial architecture and is believed to be the oldest industrial building remaining in Texas. The site was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1983. This location offers a direct connection to San Antonio's foundational manufacturing history.
