Miraflores Park: A San Antonio Historic Garden

historic place

Miraflores Park, located in San Antonio, Bexar County, is a historic sculpture garden. Its creation began around 1921 when Dr. Aureliano Urrutia, a Mexican surgeon who arrived in San Antonio during the Mexican Revolution, purchased fifteen acres of land. Dr. Urrutia intended to create a private garden inspired by Xochimilco, his birthplace in Mexico City. The park featured intricate sculptures, including faux bois and faux stone works by artist Dionicio Rodriguez, along with ornate Talavera benches and fountains. It served as a private retreat for the Urrutia family and a place for entertaining guests. Over the years, ownership changed hands several times. The City of San Antonio acquired the park in 2005 or 2006, incorporating it into Brackenridge Park. Miraflores Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 2006. Today, this site reflects a unique blend of Mexican and Texan cultural heritage.
