historic place
The Old Lone Star Brewery, a historic place in San Antonio's Bexar County, has a notable past. The Lone Star Brewing Association was established in 1883 by San Antonio businessmen John Henry Kampmann and Edward Hope, with investment from St. Louis magnate Adolphus Busch. The brewery complex at 200 West Jones Avenue was built between 1895 and 1904. Designed by E. Jungenfeld and Company, with local architects James Wahrenberger and Albert Beckmann, it became the largest brewery in Texas by 1900. Operations ended around 1917 due to Prohibition. After various uses, the San Antonio Museum Association acquired the property in the 1970s. The Old Lone Star Brewery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Today, this historic complex houses the San Antonio Museum of Art. Its transformation highlights its enduring architectural and historical importance to San Antonio.
