Post Chapel, Fort Sam Houston
historic place
The Post Chapel, also known as the Gift Chapel, is a historic place located in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. Plans for its construction began in 1907, with Chaplain Thomas Dickson leading a fundraising drive. Donations from over 1,000 military families and San Antonio residents, along with land donated by the city, funded the chapel's creation. Construction started in January 1908. Designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style by Leo Dielmann, the chapel was dedicated on October 17, 1909, by President William Howard Taft. This marked Fort Sam Houston's first permanent house of worship. Over the years, the chapel served various functions, including hosting three courts-martial related to the 1917 Houston riot. In 1953, it was the site of funeral services for retired Army General Jonathan Wainwright. The Post Chapel stands as a significant historical structure within Fort Sam Houston.
