Prospect Hill Missionary Baptist Church

historic place

Prospect Hill Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio, Bexar County, is a historic place. The congregation for this church organized in 1890. They initially occupied a smaller, one-story church. After acquiring additional land at the corner of Buena Vista and San Jacinto streets, the current building was constructed. The church building, located at 1601 Buena Vista, was completed in 1911. Architects Henry J. Harker and Arthur A. Evans designed the structure. It features the Beaux Arts architectural style, which was popular between 1880 and 1920. This style is rare in San Antonio. The Prospect Hill Missionary Baptist Church is significant as the city's only remaining example of a church built in this particular style. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Today, the former church serves a new purpose as the Prospect Hill Apartments for Senior Citizens. This site is historically important for its unique architectural representation within San Antonio.
