Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital

historic place

The Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital, a significant historic place in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, opened in 1917. Its construction began in 1915. Named for Robert B. Green, a former county judge and state senator, this institution was established as a charity hospital. San Antonio was booming, with troops for World War I and refugees from the Mexican Revolution, creating a high demand for medical services. The city and county jointly funded its construction with $250,000. The hospital quickly became crucial, notably treating patients during the 1918 influenza epidemic. Over the years, it served indigent patients, though it faced inconsistent funding. In 1955, Bexar County voters created the Bexar County Hospital District, which stabilized the hospital's finances. Today, the original Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital building still stands. It is part of University Health's Robert B. Green Campus, functioning as a multi-specialty outpatient center. This site represents a long history of public health care in San Antonio.
