Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel
historic place
The Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel, a historic place in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas, was completed in 1923. Construction for this English Gothic chapel began on October 17, 1921. The chapel was the vision of Mother Florence Walter, Superior General of the Congregation of Divine Providence from 1886 to 1925. Architect Leo Dielmann designed the structure, with August Fuessel as the contractor. The Sisters of Divine Providence undertook significant efforts to fund the chapel, including selling needlework and collecting donations. Its Italian marble altar was funded by contributions from 15,000 students. The chapel features stained glass windows imported from Germany and a central spire that rises 193 feet. Dedicated in the fall of 1923, the Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel was later consecrated in 1928, once its debt was paid. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 26, 2021. The chapel continues to serve the Sisters of Divine Providence and Our Lady of the Lake University community.
