San Antonio Casino Club Building

historic place

The San Antonio Casino Club Building, located in Bexar County, Texas, has a history rooted in two distinct organizations. The exclusive Casino Club was formed in 1854 by San Antonio Germans. Later, in 1881, the San Antonio Club was established for literary purposes. These two institutions merged in 1925, creating the San Antonio Casino Club. The building itself, a downtown landmark with a distinctive tiered dome, was completed in 1927. It featured club rooms, dining rooms, dormitories, and a ballroom. In 1942, oilman Thomas Gilcrease purchased the structure, and it became known as the Gilcrease Building. A historical marker for the building was erected in 1979 by the State Historical Survey Committee. This building reflects the city's social and architectural development in the early 20th century.
