San Antonio Loan and Trust Building

historic place

The San Antonio Loan and Trust Building, a significant historic place in Bexar County, Texas, stands prominently at 235 East Commerce Street. Construction of this five-story masonry structure began in 1892 and was completed by 1903. It was commissioned by George W. Brackenridge, a notable philanthropist and University of Texas Regent, considered one of San Antonio's most influential citizens of his era. The building originally housed the San Antonio Loan and Trust, which was Texas's first trust company, operating here until 1970. Brackenridge and his sister also made the top floors their personal residence. Architecturally, the building displays a classical design, blending Victorian and Classic details. Its front facade features rusticated limestone, transitioning to brick on other sections. The structure includes a distinct first-floor base, a three-story shaft, and an attic floor topped with a classical cornice and balustrade. As a listed property on the National Register of Historic Places, the San Antonio Loan and Trust Building reflects an important period in the city's financial and architectural development.
