San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
historic place
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, located in Bexar County, Texas, preserves a significant part of Spanish colonial history. The park was established on November 10, 1978, and officially began operation on April 1, 1983. It encompasses four of the five Spanish frontier missions originally founded along the San Antonio River: San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, San Juan Capistrano, and San Francisco de la Espada. Franciscan friars established these missions in the 18th century. Their primary purpose was to convert native populations to Catholicism and integrate them into Spanish colonial society. Each mission functioned as a self-sufficient community, featuring a church, farm, and ranch. Mission San José was founded in 1720. Missions Concepción, San Juan, and Espada were relocated to the San Antonio River valley in 1731 from East Texas. These sites offer a direct connection to the complex cultural exchange between Spanish and Native American peoples in early Texas, shaping the region's enduring heritage.
