San Antonio US Post Office and Courthouse
historic place
The San Antonio US Post Office and Courthouse, a historic place in Bexar County, was constructed from 1935 to 1936 and opened in 1937. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by architects Ralph Haywood Cameron and Paul Philippe Cret, it featured an early innovation: its basement and first floor were air-conditioned, a first for a post office in the nation. The lobby displays a 16-panel fresco mural, 'San Antonio's Importance in Texas History,' completed in 1939 by artist Howard Cook. This building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Today, it is known as the Hipolito F. Garcia Federal Building and United States Courthouse, maintaining its historical presence in San Antonio.
