Smith--Young Tower
historic place
The building known today as the Tower Life Building in San Antonio, Texas, was originally completed in 1929 as the Smith--Young Tower. Located in Bexar County, this historic place was designed by the prolific San Antonio architectural firm of Atlee B. and Robert Ayres. They created a neo-Gothic skyscraper, rising 31 stories. Upon its formal opening in June 1929, the Smith--Young Tower was the tallest building in San Antonio, a distinction it held until 1968. It was a central component of the Bowen's Island development. The tower also housed the city's first Sears, Roebuck and Company store, which occupied the basement and first four floors. The building's exterior features a brick and terra-cotta octagonal design with Gothic elements. The Smith--Young Tower remains a significant architectural landmark in downtown San Antonio.
