Spanish Governor's Palace

historic place

The Spanish Governor's Palace, a historic place in Bexar County, stands in San Antonio, Texas. This stone structure was completed in 1749. It originally served as the residence and headquarters for the captain of the Presidio de Béxar, known then as the Comandancia. In the early 20th century, preservationist Adina De Zavala gave the building its current name. An interim governor of Texas, Juan Ignacio Perez, had resided here from 1816 to 1817. The city of San Antonio purchased the building in 1929, and its restoration was dedicated in 1930. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. This palace is the only remaining example of 18th-century Spanish Colonial residential architecture in Texas. It offers a tangible connection to San Antonio's Spanish colonial past.
