St. Louis Hall at St. Mary's University
historic place
St. Louis Hall stands on the campus of St. Mary's University in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas. This historic place was constructed between 1893 and 1894, completed in 1894. Designed in the Romanesque Revival style, the building features buff-colored brick and limestone. When it opened in 1894, the structure was known as St. Louis College. It served as a boarding school for boys from fifth through fourteenth grades. The building initially housed all necessary facilities, including classrooms, a chapel, kitchen, and sleeping quarters. At that time, it was the only building on the campus, situated at the end of a horse and buggy trail. A full college curriculum was established by 1904. In 1921, all college classes moved to this campus. St. Louis College became St. Mary's College in 1923, and then St. Mary's University in 1927. St. Louis Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. It is recognized for its historical contribution to education and as an example of Romanesque architecture in San Antonio. This building remains the oldest and an iconic structure at St. Mary's University.
