Staacke Brothers Building
historic place
The Staacke Brothers Building is located in San Antonio, Bexar County. It was completed in 1894. This structure housed the successful carriage business of German immigrant August Frederick Staacke. Staacke arrived in San Antonio in 1848 and established a general merchandising store, which also sold carriages and wagons. His three sons later took over the carriage business, forming Staacke Brothers in 1889. Prominent Texas architect James Riely Gordon designed the building. It is a three-story Renaissance Revival style structure. The building features a stamped metal façade and cornice. Notable architectural elements include granite Corinthian columns, a two-story arcade, and inset bowed windows on the top floor. In 1979, the San Antonio Conservation Society purchased the building to prevent its demolition. Restoration occurred between 1982 and 1983. The Staacke Brothers Building was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1984. This site illustrates San Antonio's commercial development in the late 19th century.
