The Barr Building in San Antonio

historic place

The Barr Building, a historic place in San Antonio's Bexar County, was constructed in 1905. It was built for David Perry Barr, a photographer who had moved to San Antonio in 1880 after beginning his career during the Civil War. The building was designed by San Antonio architect Leo M.J. Dielmann, a significant figure in the city's architectural scene during the 20th century. The Barr Building was notable for its unique design, combining Barr's photographic studio and residence on the second floor with commercial rental spaces on the first floor. This blend of commercial and residential functions within a single structure was an unusual approach for its time. After David Perry Barr's death in 1925, the building continued its role in the community, housing institutions such as the Sarli School of Music and the New York School of Dance. The Barr Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1985, recognizing its architectural and historical importance in San Antonio.
