The Emil Elmendorf House
historic place
The Emil Elmendorf House is a historic place located at 509 Burleson Street in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. This residence was built in 1884 for Emil Elmendorf, a businessman and civic leader. Elmendorf was a co-owner of Elmendorf and Company, a prominent hardware firm in San Antonio. The house sits in Dignowity Hill, which was an early and prestigious residential area of San Antonio. Noted architect Alfred Giles designed the structure. It features a Victorian raised-cottage style, combining both Greek Revival and Victorian architectural elements. This design, featuring a basement above ground with the main living floor on the second level, is now one of the city's few remaining examples. The Emil Elmendorf House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. A historical marker was erected in 1982, acknowledging its significance. This house exemplifies the prosperity evident in San Antonio during the late 19th century.
