The Quadrangle, San Antonio, Texas
historic place
The Quadrangle, a historic place in San Antonio, Bexar County, began construction in 1876. This limestone structure, completed around 1877, was the original fort at Sam Houston. It first served as a Quartermaster Depot and headquarters for the Department of Texas. In 1886, Apache leader Geronimo and 32 other Apaches were held here as prisoners for about six weeks. The Quadrangle is also known for its resident deer and peacocks, present on the grounds since the late 1800s. As the oldest building on Fort Sam Houston, The Quadrangle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today, it houses the U.S. Army North. This site reflects a significant aspect of San Antonio's military history.
