The Toltec Apartments, San Antonio, Texas

historic place

In San Antonio, Texas, stands The Toltec, a historic apartment building. Constructed in 1913, it was designed by Ernest P. Behles and built by the Gordon-Jones construction company. This three-story concrete and masonry structure was originally commissioned for Dr. Augustus Maverick, who was tragically murdered before its completion. The Maverick family owned the property until 1996. The Toltec showcases early 20th-century Classical Revival style. Its architectural integrity is preserved in its original design and finishes. Notable features include its U-shaped layout, white stone detailing on red brick, and a concrete and cast iron staircase. In 2014, The Toltec Apartments received a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark designation, and its historical marker was erected. This building is a significant example of early apartment living in downtown San Antonio.
