U.S. Army Medical Department Museum

historic place

The U.S. Army Medical Department Museum is located in San Antonio, Texas, within Bexar County. While its collection spans Army medical history from 1775 to the present, the museum's origins trace back to the Medical Field Service School at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. The museum relocated to Fort Sam Houston in 1946. The current museum building was constructed in 1989 through private donations. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit historically significant property related to the Army Medical Department. Exhibits include medical equipment, uniforms, and vehicles, such as a restored hospital train car from the Korean War. The museum also highlights key figures like Dr. William Beaumont, the 'Father of Gastric Physiology.' It documents the Army's medical contributions during times of peace and war. The museum is currently undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen in June 2025. This site provides a historical account of military medicine and the personnel who shaped its evolution.
