Uhl, Gustav, House and Store

historic place

The Gustav Uhl House and Store is located in San Antonio, Texas, within the Irish Flats neighborhood. The original house was constructed around 1857. Between 1869 and 1870, Gustav Uhl added a store, opening his grocery business. Uhl had married Clara Altmann in 1868. This one-story, plastered limestone building exemplifies the local "Irish Flats" architectural style. After Uhl's death, his son managed the store until 1919. The building later housed various businesses, including the Talcott Electric Company. Currently, it serves as offices for the Tobin Foundation for the Theater Arts. The Gustav Uhl House and Store is significant as a rare surviving "Irish Flats" structure and for its history in neighborhood commerce. The specific text of a historical marker for this site and its erection year are not available.
