Ursuline Academy, San Antonio

historic place

Ursuline Academy in San Antonio, Bexar County, began in 1851. Seven Ursuline Nuns arrived that year, opening a girls' school on November 3rd. The original complex of eight buildings was constructed from 1851 to 1882. The main building is the largest known Texas structure built with the French 'Pise de Terre,' or rammed earth, method. The nuns opened the school six weeks after their arrival, despite finding the building in disrepair. The academy moved from this site in 1965. The San Antonio Conservation Society later acquired the principal structures. Ursuline Academy was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962. This site marks an early educational institution for girls in Texas.
