Cullen, Ezekiel, House
historic place
The Cullen, Ezekiel, House in San Augustine, Texas, is a historic place. Augustus Phelps built this Greek colonial home in 1839 for Ezekiel Wimberly Cullen. Ezekiel Cullen, a settler from Georgia, was a Texas Revolution soldier. He served in the Republic's third Congress and authored a bill to fund public schools with public lands. The house features Greek Revival architecture, including Doric columns and a garret ballroom. In 1952, Ezekiel's grandson, Hugh Roy Cullen, restored the house. He donated it to the Ezekiel Cullen Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1953. A historical marker was erected here in 1965. The Cullen, Ezekiel, House is significant for its architecture and connection to early Texas education.
