A Home on Commerce Square

historical marker

This historical marker in Austin County commemorates two lots ideally situated near Commerce Square and the Brazos River in San Felipe, Texas. San Felipe de Austin, founded by Stephen F. Austin in 1823, served as the capital of his colony and was a significant commercial, social, and political center in early Texas. Commerce Square was one of the town's four public plazas. Like many properties in San Felipe, these two lots changed hands multiple times. The Calvit family first developed the property. Its last known owner was Almyra. This location highlights early development and property ownership patterns in a key colonial Texas town.
