A Town Hall, San Felipe, Texas

historical marker

In San Felipe, Austin County, a historical marker stands near the site of an important early Texas building. A Town Hall, built around 1830, once stood here. This structure was central to the political developments leading to Texas independence. It hosted the First and Second Conventions of Texas in 1832 and 1833. The Consultation of 1835, another pivotal gathering, also convened within its walls. The provisional government functioned here until March 2, 1836, when the Republic was formed at Washington on the Brazos. The building was burned with the town on March 29, 1836, to prevent its falling into the hands of the advancing Mexican army. The historical marker commemorating these events was erected in 1936. This location highlights where critical governmental and revolutionary decisions were made for early Texas.
