Bottomland Farms
historical marker
Bottomland Farms in San Felipe, Texas, played a vital role in the early Austin Colony. While downtown San Felipe served as the colony's administrative center, the surrounding farms and ranches provided essential food for settlers. These agricultural operations also generated profits, contributing to the colony's growth. Farm plots, known as 'labors,' each measured 177 acres. These plots extended outward from the town, often situated along waterways. These waterways facilitated the transportation of goods, connecting the farms to markets. The fertile bottomlands along the Brazos River were key to this agricultural success. This system helped establish a thriving economy in early Texas.
