In San Felipe, Austin County, a historical marker commemorates the Cotten Print Shop. Here, Godwin B. Cotten established a significant printing operation. Before settling in Texas, Cotten gained experience printing in Alabama, Louisiana, and Tamaulipas, Mexico. In San Felipe, he published The Texas Gazette, which began in September 1829. Cotten also produced the first book published in Texas, titled 'Translation of the Laws, Orders, and Contracts, on Colonization.' This site represents an early hub of communication and legal documentation in Texas history.
