Frydek Catholic Cemetery

historical marker

The Frydek Catholic Cemetery is located in Austin County, Texas. Czech immigrants began settling in this area during the 1850s. They named their new community Frydek, after a town in their homeland. In 1885, two people died and were buried here on land owned by Jan Pavlicek. By 1890, Jan Pavlicek officially deeded this land to be consecrated by the church. At that time, the cemetery contained thirteen graves. In 1907, the citizens of Frydek erected a school building on this site. This structure was also used as a church and a nuns' home. In 1916, the building was moved to the center of town. The Frydek Catholic Cemetery remains as a reminder of the area's Czech heritage. This historical marker was erected in 1991 by the Texas Historical Commission.
