J.J. Josey General Store

historical marker

In San Felipe, Texas, you will find the J.J. Josey General Store. This building was constructed in 1847 by John Crutcher on the Plaza de Commercio. It was the last store built in the town after its burning in 1836 by military order. Dr. J.J. Josey purchased the store in 1867. It then operated continuously as a general store until 1942. The building itself was relocated multiple times, including a move in 1880 to the Texas Western Narrow Gauge Railroad. It was returned to its original site and restored in 1962. The store was later moved to the Stephen F. Austin State Park in 1969. A historical marker for this site was erected in 1987 in Austin County. The J.J. Josey General Store represents a significant commercial establishment in San Felipe's post-Revolution history.
