San Felipe United Methodist Church

historical marker

The San Felipe United Methodist Church in San Felipe, Texas, has a history rooted in the town's early development. In 1837, after the town of San Felipe de Austin was incorporated, the town council constructed a multi-purpose building on land known as “Constitution Square.” This one-story building was designed to serve as a town hall, a school, and a church. The local Methodist group used this building for their evening worship services. By 1847, a new town hall was built, and the original structure then functioned solely as a church and school. A second floor was added that same year. In 1880, with the construction of a new school, the first floor of this building became dedicated entirely to church use. A steeple was added in 1883, and the building officially became the Methodists' church. The congregation continues to meet in this historic building today. The historical marker for the San Felipe United Methodist Church was erected in 1962.
