Stephen F. Austin in San Felipe

historical marker

Here in San Felipe, we remember Stephen F. Austin, widely known as the Father of Texas. Born on November 3, 1793, he dedicated his life to this region until his death on December 27, 1836. Austin was instrumental in planting the first Anglo-American colony in Texas, a group famously referred to as 'The Old Three Hundred'. Through his various colonization efforts, he successfully settled more than a thousand families in Texas. From 1823 until 1828, Stephen F. Austin held significant power, serving as the actual ruler of Texas and exercising complete civil and military authority over his colonists. He remained its most influential leader thereafter. This historical marker, erected in 1936 by the State of Texas, stands here in Austin County to commemorate his profound and foundational contributions to the establishment of Texas.
