Welcome to San Felipe de Austin. Located in Austin County, Texas, this site marks the central business district of what was once a pivotal settlement. Between 1823 and 1836, San Felipe de Austin served as the focal point for American colonists immigrating to and settling in Mexican-controlled Texas. Established by Stephen F. Austin, this town was the headquarters and unofficial capital of his colony, becoming the first urban center in the Austin colony. It was recognized as the Colonial Capital of Texas and functioned as the political heart of colonial Texas. Significant events occurred here, including the Conventions of 1832 and 1833, and the Consultation of 1835, all of which contributed to the Texas Revolution. The provisional government of Texas also operated from this location in 1835. San Felipe de Austin was razed in 1836 during the Texas Revolution. This site represents a crucial period in the formation of Anglo-American Texas.
