The Ferguson House in Temple, Texas

historic place

The Ferguson House is a historic place in Temple, Bell County, Texas. It was built in 1907 for James E. and Miriam A. Ferguson. Both James and Miriam Ferguson were later elected twice to the governor's office in Texas. Miriam Ferguson holds the distinction of being the first woman ever elected Governor in any state. During their terms, the Texas Highway Department and public schools achieved great importance. This house served as the family home until Jim Ferguson became Governor in 1915. They returned to reside here again from 1917 to 1925, a period that included Miriam Ferguson's first inauguration as governor. A historical marker was erected at this site in 1967. The Ferguson House is significant for its direct connection to two Texas governors, including the pioneering achievement of the state's first woman governor.
