The Kyle Hotel, Temple, Texas

historic place

The Kyle Hotel is a historic place located in Temple, Bell County, Texas. This prominent building was constructed in 1928. Its creation was a direct response to the increasing demand from Temple's growing medical community, particularly the Scott & White Hospital. Dr. Arthur C. Scott was instrumental in its development, convincing Beaumont oilman Wesley Kyle to invest, and the hotel was named in his honor. Upon its opening, the Kyle Hotel operated as a first-class establishment, managed by the prestigious Baker chain. It featured amenities such as a barbershop, beauty salon, coffee shop, and a roof garden. Scott & White Hospital leased the upper floors to provide accommodations for patient families and outpatient care. This 13-story structure was once considered the tallest building between Austin and Waco. The hotel closed its doors in 1974. However, it reopened in 1991, repurposed to provide low-cost apartments for the elderly, handicapped, and disabled, with city offices occupying the ground floor. The Kyle Hotel remains a significant landmark, reflecting Temple's historical role as a medical and transportation hub.
