Douglas, John B. and Ketura (Kettie), House

historic place

The John B. and Ketura Douglas House is a historic place in Tyler, Smith County. Built around 1873, it was the home of John B. Douglas, a Civil War veteran, merchant, and city official. His wife, Ketura Walker Douglas, known as Kettie, was a local church and civic leader. This high Victorian wood-frame house was likely built as a two-story structure with a three-story tower. The family modified the house in stages over time. A one-story wing was added by 1884, and the house footprint was enlarged by 1898. A second story was added to the rear wing in the early 20th century, with other significant changes completed by 1912. Architecturally, the house is unique in Tyler. It is the only identified example of high Victorian residential design combining Italianate and Second Empire style details. A historical marker for the house was erected in 1998. This site offers insight into late 19th-century Tyler and its prominent residents.
