Martin Hall at Texas College
historic place
Martin Hall is a historic place in Smith County, Texas, located on the campus of Texas College in Tyler. This prominent three-story Classic Revival brick building was constructed in 1924. When first built, Martin Hall served as a classroom building and lecture hall. It also housed administrative offices and assembly spaces for the college community. The building included an original auditorium that remains today. Over time, Martin Hall transitioned to become the college's designated administration building. The hall is named in honor of Bishop J.C. Martin. Texas College itself holds historical significance, having been founded in 1894 by ministers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with the mission to provide educational opportunities. Martin Hall is recognized for its historical importance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2015, the building experienced structural degradation and moisture infiltration due to storm damage. A comprehensive renovation project was undertaken, with work completed in 2019. Martin Hall continues to be a central feature of the Texas College campus, representing a significant part of its enduring history.
