Fort House, Waco, Texas

historic place

Welcome to Fort House, a historic place in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. This Greek Revival style home was built in 1868 by William A. Fort. Fort, who settled in Waco in 1854, became a prominent citizen. He served as acting president of Waco National Bank and owned the city's first transit system. The house is constructed of locally made pink brick. It features fluted Ionic columns, which were shipped from New Orleans. The original property spanned six acres. Initially, the house had a detached kitchen to minimize fire risk and keep heat and odors separate. In 1956, the Junior League of Waco purchased Fort House for preservation. They commissioned architects to restore the home to its earlier state. This house offers insight into the residences of affluent Waco families during the late Victorian period. We do not have the specific text for a historical marker at this site and its erection year are not available.
