McDermott Motors Building
historic place
The McDermott Motors Building is located in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. Constructed in 1928, it was originally a Buick dealership opened by Wilford Dees McDermott. Renowned Waco architect Milton Scott designed the building in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. In 1931, the building transitioned to serve as an armory for the National Guard, becoming known as Fort Fiske Wright. During World War II, in 1943, it was leased to North American Aviation for wartime aircraft production. After the war, the building saw various uses, including a brief return as an automobile dealership, a period of vacancy, a Christian bookstore, and operations for the charitable organization Caritas. The McDermott Motors Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 2004. This structure illustrates how Waco's buildings have adapted over time to meet changing community needs.
