Waco High School

historic place

Welcome to Waco High School, a significant historic place in McLennan County. The institution's origins trace back to the early 1880s, when it was known as Central High, located on Fourth and Webster streets. The prominent Classical Revival building at 815 Columbus Avenue was constructed between 1910 and 1912, designed by architect Milton W. Scott. It officially opened for classes in 1912. This structure is the oldest extant public school building in Waco. From 1912 through 1971, this building served as Waco's primary high school. The Waco Independent School District began racial integration in the late 1960s. In 1971, Waco High School relocated. The historic Columbus Avenue building was later used for other educational programs before closing in 1990. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 2009. This site represents a long history of public education in McLennan County.
