Willow City School

historic place

Welcome to Willow City School, a historic place in Gillespie County, Texas. The current two-story granite school building was erected in 1905. This structure was built on land donated by J.W. Lindeman and J.C. Hardin. It was the third school for the community. The first was a one-room log cabin with no floor, which also served as a church. After a flood destroyed the log cabin in 1890, a two-story frame schoolhouse was constructed. The 1905 building, in Colonial Revival style, featured two downstairs classrooms and an upstairs auditorium with a stage. A well was drilled in 1920 to provide water. Classes were taught here until 1957, and the school consolidated with the Fredericksburg Independent School District in 1961. Beyond education, the building and grounds also served for community events. The building now functions as a community center. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2005. This site reflects the history of rural education and community life in Gillespie County.
