May--Hickey House

historic place

The May-Hickey House, in Yoakum, De Witt County, is an important early vernacular dwelling. Built in the 1840s for the John Joseph May family, the James Hickey family resided here from 1861, later acquiring the property. This one-and-a-half-story home features hewn logs with chinking, later covered with milled siding. It includes an open dogtrot and stone chimneys, characteristic of early Texas architecture. The May-Hickey House was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1988. This site illustrates early Texas dwelling construction.
