Municipal Power Plant, Yoakum, Texas
historic place
In 1930, Yoakum officials decided to construct their own Municipal Power Plant. This decision followed unsuccessful attempts to purchase existing electric power facilities. Approximately 300 local residents attended the city commission meeting where this was approved. The building was designed by Montgomery and Ward engineers and constructed in 1932. It operated as Yoakum's sole electric power plant until 1938. The facility then continued as an auxiliary electric plant into the early 1960s. From 1964 to 1989, the structure served as a municipal machine shop. In 1988, city officials offered the building to the "Friends of the Library" organization. It was subsequently converted into a public library, a project recognized for its restoration and adaptive reuse of a historic building. A historical marker was installed at this site in 1993. The Municipal Power Plant illustrates Yoakum's historical efforts to provide essential public services and adapt its significant structures for evolving community needs.
